They are \u201cAI\u201d-generated twins that vary in gender presentation, titled as another \u201cAI\u201d perceives their faces.<\/p>\n<p>The faces are generated using deep learning algorithms trained on still frames of thousands of YouTubers speaking to the camera. Generated individuals are then algorithmically regendered and the variations fed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/rekognition\/latest\/dg\/faces.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commercial deep learning based facial analysis algorithms<\/a>, which attempt to categorize the faces according to the emotion of the subject apparent in their facial expression. Despite the marketing of such tools, reading emotions solely by analyzing a person\u2019s face is a feat that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2021\/08\/20\/you-cant-determine-emotion-from-someones-facial-expression-and-neither-can-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neither humans<\/a>\u00a0nor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2021\/04\/artificial-intelligence-misreading-human-emotion\/618696\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAI\u2019s\u201d<\/a>\u00a0can reliably do. Although the diagnosis has been retired, stereotypes of women as nervous, fearful, and uncertain continue to impact how women are perceived and treated. And while more women than men are diagnosed with anxiety, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=anxiety&amp;tbm=isch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google image search for \u201canxiety\u201d<\/a>\u00a0returns a far disproportionate number of images of women \u2014 who tend to be depicted in stereotypical \u201cfemale hysteria\u201d poses. The stereotype is further augmented by the cultural expectation of smiling as women\u2019s default facial expression.
